Surrealism in 3D, it’s coming to a theater near you. As reported in Gallerist NY, filmmaker Philippe Mora is currently making The Surrealist, a movie about Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala with 3D technology. Dalí will be played by actor Alan Cumming and Judy Davis will tackle the role of Gala. The New York Post is reporting that Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez has also been approached by Mora to be in the film. Dalí was said to be an avid fan of baseball even making a baseball related animated short film in 1946 for Disney entitled, “Destino”.
Mora explains the basis of The Surrealist, “It’s about an imaginary love affair that he had with the Mona Lisa. Gala gets jealous, even though it’s an imaginary lover. That’s quite a woman to compete with!”
As for the decision to create the film in 3D, Mora explains, “Dalí himself got obsessed with 3D in the early 1950s when the first 3D renaissance occurred in Hollywood. He started doing paintings that required anaglyph glasses to see and he did about 150 paintings in anaglyph 3D.”
The Surrealist will be filmed in Australia and is expected to begin production at the end of the year.
