Multi-Layered Sculptural Deconstruction-Reconstruction
Assemblage Visual Art in Newest Rare Exhibition
Galerie Michael | Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills | June 7 – June 30, 2019
LOS ANGELES, CA; (May 7, 2019) — Galerie Michael, among the most distinguished fine art galleries in North America, located on Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, is honored to announce the latest exhibition of British-born American composer and visual artist Bernie Taupin from June 7 to June 30, 2019. “Bernie Taupin; The Artist, The Raconteur & His Blowtorch” features 20 never-before-seen large-scale 3-D assemblage artworks on canvas, panels, wood and striking life-size sculptures made of barbed wire, padlocks, twine, fabric and plastic. This thought-provoking showcase represents a top museum-quality art exhibition in the United States that has been years in the making.
In addition, the exhibit will be supported by archival material from Mr. Taupin’s personal collection, including sketches and private photos of the solitary artist at work in his studio in Santa Barbara County, California, providing a glimpse into the innovative process and artistic mind of the lyricist as he unleashes his creativity into visual art.
Bernie Taupin has been a lifelong artist, creating visual art from the age of 17. Through an unprecedented 50-year collaboration with Elton John, as one-half of themost successful songwriting partnerships of all time, it was in the early 1990’s that visual art became the main thrust of Taupin’s creative endeavors, while music resulted in 35 gold and 25 platinum albums, 30 Top 40 hits in the USA, more than 255 million records sold worldwide, and the record for the biggest-selling single of all time—33 million copies of “Candle in the Wind ’97.” Bernie Taupin has made his mark across several artistic and cultural mediums.
“The imagination is the most powerful tool artists possess, enabling us to conjure up beautiful distractions for the eyes and ears. My dimensional work is simply the visual extension of what I have spent my life creating through words,” says Taupin. “Music and art are an inevitable collision. I personally gravitated from one to the other because I desired to create on a different topical level, and simply because visceral visual art exerts an almost narcotic drive in me” says Taupin.
In his early work, Taupin was inspired by groundbreaking Abstract Expressionists including Hans Hoffman, Franz Kline, Anselm Kiefer, and Robert
Rauschenberg. Taupin’s artwork evolved from Ab-Ex explorations to a level of self-identification, followed by experimentations with text-based content and minimalist Pop Art concepts.
By 2016 and 2017, his works became highly innovative and organic sculptural constructions extending off the canvas with bound cord and wire. On canvas, he continued to express with found objects of interest, using repurposed materials and artifacts, things such as weathered and shattered guitars and other symbols of American imagery and patriotism. Taupin’s multi-layered creations incorporate manipulated flags woven into interesting compositions, instruments, scorched paper, wax, wire, wood, corrugated cardboard, fabric, bubble wrap, and resin. Combined with musical features, the fusing of American culture continues with written text, that is designed to provoke and stimulate. Taupin deconstructs, incorporating a love of twine and epoxy that has become known as “web and weave.” Works on view in this exhibit incorporate all of his elements.
This extraordinary collection is an opportunity to view, and also acquire original works from one of the greatest creatives in the world today, displayed powerfully on the walls of Galerie Michael—filling two full salons in the 12,000-square-foot gallery until the end of June 2019. The artworks illustrate the breadth of this artist’s vast creativity over two decades.
“In keeping with our dedication to collecting, exhibiting and exposing the best works to our world audience, we are pleased to launch ‘Bernie Taupin: The Artist,The Raconteur & His Blowtorch,’” says Galerie Michael Founder and President Michael Schwartz. “Bernie’s work speaks from the heart and merits the continued attention of a global audience. This exhibition beautifully showcases his talent for storytelling on canvas, wood and sculpture—from a mind that has created some of the greatest song lyrics to ever exist and that have shaped many of our lives.”
“Art is about telling a story, no matter what medium. I have spent my entire life telling stories and I want to continue telling stories. It seems to be what I’m best at doing, whether in song, or on canvas or wood. Inspiration comes out on a sonic level and on a visual level. My hope is to stimulate people’s minds. The fact that what I’ve done has marked moments in people’s lives, gives me great satisfaction and that is what I hope my art will bring to people; comfort, joy, inspiration and something people can embrace for as long as it takes,” says Taupin.
