“L’écuyère-clown sur fond jaune” is a masterpiece.
Entirely in bright yellow, this painting boldly illustrates the artist’s continual fascination with the circus as a metaphor of life, and stands testament to the enduring magic that the circus and its players held for Chagall. The acrobatic clown takes center stage, balancing on a horse, while another clown clasps a Chagallian bouquet of flowers to the right, a lively musician on the top right gives the composition sound, and an attentive audience observes from the background. The circus appeared as a dominant motif in Chagall’s artwork from the 1920s onwards. Freed from a fixed time and place, the fantastical world of the circus allowed him to unleash his imagination, portraying tumbling acrobats, grimacing clowns, romantic horseback riders and soaring animals, explored in paint, ink, pencil and lithography. Chagall’s circuses however were not just arenas of entertainment, but simultaneously a more sobering reflection of humanity. The viewer is presented not with a playful fool, but rather the elongated and noble profile of a player, boldly formed with dense paint strokes, whose features strongly resemble those of the artist himself.
