Project Description

MARC CHAGALL

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was born in Vitebsk, Russia. His desire to become an artist brought him first to St. Petersburg in 1907 and then to Paris,
where the arts were flourishing. His style, while reflective of cubist, expressionist and surrealist affinities, is distinctly personal. His contributions to early modern painting and printmaking are unparalleled.

Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1887. His desire to become an artist brought him first to St. Petersburg in 1907 and then to Paris, where the arts were flourishing. Chagall participated in the art showings at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in 1912, but it was his first one-man show in Berlin which established him internationally as a leading artist. His style, while reflective of cubist, expressionist and surrealist affinities, is distinctly personal. His contributions to early modern painting and printmaking are unparalleled.

In the 1920s, the influential editor and dealer Ambroise Vollard commissioned Chagall to create book illustrations, as well as encouraged him to explore themes of the circus and the bible in his paintings. In 1950, at the age of 63, he began to work with the esteemed printer Mourlot in Paris, studying with master lithographer Charles Sorlier. Chagall’s embrace of the medium of color lithography is apparent in his work, building layer upon layer with pure color. The resulting lithographs are so dense that they resemble paintings.

For the remainder of his career, Chagall continued to create beautiful and rich paintings and lithographs filled with mysticism, folklore, romance, the bible, the circus, landscapes, musicians and Russian Judaism. He was an unparalleled colorist, and was admired for his skill as a painter and a printmaker. He courageously embraced new techniques throughout career and was rewarded with many opportunities and honors. In the 1960s and 1970s, his stained glass art appeared in such buildings as the United Nations. In 1973 a museum of his works was opened in Nice, France. In 1977, the Louvre, a world-famous art museum in Paris, exhibited sixty-two of his paintings, an extremely rare event for a living artist.
