Scène Bacchique au Minotaure, 1933

Pablo Picasso

1881-1973

Etching on watermarked Arches paper
Inscribed ‘1er état’ in pencil, lower left margin An incredibly rare, collectible and early unique impression of the first state of ”Scène Bacchique au Minotaure.” Perhaps one of only two, as Picasso expert Brigitte Baer records only one such proof, which is listed in the collection of Musée Picasso, Paris. At least one more impression, not seen by Baer, must have been printed. Exceptionally rare and impossible to find outside of a museum print room.

With champagne glass raised, the Minotaur toasts the artist’s conquests as his models recline in voluptuous abandonment beside him. The artist’s hirsute face connects him to the bestial nature
of the Minotaur.
