Description: Thirteenth and final state of the remarkable series "Autoportrait, avec deux femmes,” of which Picasso reworked in a total of 13 states within 3 days. This was the last book illustrated by Picasso to be published during the artist's lifetime. Its author, Jean Leymarie, the director of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, had organized a large exhibition in “Hommage à Picasso” at both the Grand Palais and Petit Palais in Paris in 1966. In 1971, on the occasion of Picasso's 90th birthday, Leymarie asked the Geneva publisher Albert Skira, who was also a friend of the artist, to publish the book “Picasso. Métamorphoses et Unité.” The title alludes to Métamorphoses d'Ovide that Skira had published 40 years before. This album contains 7 color reproductions of studies by Picasso for “La Chute d'Icare,” as well as 80 reproductions of preparatory drawings accompanying the preface, in which Jean Leymarie retraces the origins of the project. The etching accompanying this album (the present work), is one of Picasso's last prints. In the upper part of the etching we see three bipartite faces against a black background; in the lower part, which is light, there is a reclining nude. Published in a total edition of 510 copies, of which 135 were printed on Rives paper as a special edition. Published by Albert Skira, Geneva, 1972.
